Some providers, Gmail in particular, list one email under several folders (such as Inbox and All Mail), so the folder counts can add up to more than the unique total. For Gmail, threads are counted the way Gmail groups conversations; for other providers each email counts as its own thread.
The download is a zip with one .mbox file per folder and a manifest.csv listing every message. To check a folder yourself, count the lines starting with "From " in its .mbox file.
